Solution and Reproduction of India Rubber: for the Manufacture of Air Proof and Water Proof Articles

Solution And Reproduction Of India Rubber: For The Manufacture Of Air Proof And Water Proof Articles by F. Luedersdorff. This work provides a comprehensive examination of India Rubber (caoutchouc), its natural and artificial forms, history, physical and chemical properties, and practical methods for producing air- and water-proof coatings and objects. Luedersdorff discusses the origins and acquisition of India Rubber, the varieties found in Europe, and the composition of the milky sap, including the role of vegetable albumen and the structure of rubber particles. The book surveys solvents and swelling agents such as ether, ethereal oils, and various fats, and documents phenomena of decomposition under light and air, as well as methods to prevent degradation. It then details artificial preparation, including the use of Venice turpentine, sulphur treatment to stabilize resins, distillation techniques to remove resins, and the formation of rubber dough for coatings and articles. Practical guidance on manufacturing with rubber dough, coating cloths and leather, and protective measures against deterioration are provided.
