The second volume features CHAPTER II, in which Ain Ahlih, a beautiful youth, is drawn into peril through covetousness and desire, only to be guided by an old woman who teaches through allegory and parable. A succession of tales—the horse and the wild boar, the gazelle and the antelope, and the bear and the monkey—serve as didactic devices on fortitude, patience, and self-knowledge. Interwoven with these narratives are verses and traditions from the Koran and early Prophet traditions about patience and contentment, forming a meditation on governance, virtue, and the duties of rulers toward their subjects. The collection uses fable to illuminate moral and philosophical truths about power, humility, and human frailty.
