The Song Of Roland, Done Into English, In The Original Measure

A clash of steel, a cry of loyalty, and the echo of legend across the Pyrenees. The Song of Roland stands as the defining medieval epic poem of France, capturing the tragic heroism and unyielding honour of Roland and his companions in the fateful battle of Roncevaux Pass. Charles Scott Moncrieff's complete verse translation brings the grandeur of this chanson de geste to vivid life, preserving the original measure and music of Old French literature classics while making them immediate and compelling for the modern reader. Here, the fate of Charlemagne's army and the ideals of heroic loyalty and sacrifice are rendered with clarity and reverence. This is not merely a tale of war, but a profound meditation on the nature of duty, courage, and the bonds that shape history. The Song of Roland is a cornerstone of the Carolingian era, weaving together the rich tapestry of 11th century France with the universal themes that echo through Beowulf and other medieval epics. Students of medieval literature and collectors of classic poetry alike will find in these verses a bridge to a world where faith and fealty were everything, and where the songs of heroes shaped the soul of a nation.
