Gr 2-3-Two readable series entries illustrated with full-color photographs. A Carolina wren, American and English robins, a blue jay, a catbird, and the Australian superb lyrebird are among the songbirds introduced. In Talking Birds, two-page entries briefly describe the imitative birds that can be trained to mimic human speech. Instructions on how to train pet birds to talk are provided as well as a warning not to purchase birds that may have been taken from their natural habitat instead of bred and raised in captivity. Both titles describe the physiology of bird songs and sounds as well as the purposes of such types of communication. The gradual development of each individual bird's distinctive "spin" on its species' song is also described. While both books define the syrinx, the specific organ of bird song, Songbirds includes a diagram of the internal organs involved in vocalization. Conjecture is introduced as to the reasons birds in the wild sing, call, and chatter, and why captive birds can be trained to repeat human speech.-Frances E. Millhouser, Chantilly Regional Library, Fairfax County, VA
