Join a Community and Sing Songs about Space
Do you like to sing? Do you sing songs in your car? Do you love karaoke? Congratulations! You’ve just found a book of songs created by someone who for years has been writing new lyrics to existing songs or creating entirely new tunes because she loves to sing. And she loves to get together with other people who do the exact same thing and who welcome others—no matter how well they sing—to join them.

Songs of Space is a collection of science fiction and mystery author Roberta Rogow’s filk songs (the musical genre of science fiction) about Space. The book includes both serious and humorous songs about planets, space exploration, and speculation about the future of space discoveries and aliens. These songs provide a history of the space program with its successes and failures. Rogow, a well-known filker, is a talented singer and musician and has created many filk songs about various topics.

Often filk songs include satirical parodies, tragedy, and history. Some of the topics filkers write and sing about include:

• Space
• Science fiction
• Fantasy
• Mystery
• Horror
• Computers or games
• Favorite characters and themes in TV, movies, and books
• What’s going on in the world

Teachers may use these songs as a fun way to teach schoolkids about Earth’s solar system, the history of the space program with its successes and failures, and speculation about possible alien visits.

Why don’t you pick up this book and head for a science fiction or fantasy convention to attend one of the many filk panels? You can attend special filk presentations, sing songs like the ones included in this book with a group of filkers, or create your own lyrics or tunes. You’ll be welcomed by all. You’ll find a community of people who just like you want to sing and have fun. Filkers include librarians and authors like Rogow, accountants, salespeople, plumbers, electricians, doctors, rocket scientists, nurses, federal workers, artists, musicians, lawyers, teachers, waiters, and so on. Anyone can join.

What are you waiting for? Buy this book and join a group where you can sing Rogow’s Space songs with them. If you can’t make it to a convention, sing the songs according to the tunes listed. Sing them anywhere—at school, in your car, your house, the store, or in a group you create. Just have fun.
