Add to basketSorcerers played an important role in the tribal beliefs and actions of the people of Northern Rhodesia (now part of Zimbabwe) when Professor Marwick studied this aspect of their customs during three study tours there between 1946 and 1953. He found sorcerers were feared by educated and economically settled, as well as by less well-informed folk. His studies focused on the Cewa tribal areas, although he believed these beliefs were influential over much wider regions of southern Africa socially, politically, tribally and economically. The various aspects of his investigations and findings are covered in 11 chapters. First edition of 1965, 339 pages including three appendices, bibliography, index and glossary, (with one appendix including a fold-out generational table), six photo plates, including frontis, carry 17 b/w images, six maps, fold-out genealogical table plus 39 other figures and 27 tables also a list of the 50 case studies included in text. Green hardcovers with gilt spine titles are VG, two ink names/date top FFEP also light tape shadows at corners, front board slightly loose but firmly attached, text block is excellent. Original and unclipped DJ is VG with few chips and small tears, mainly at spine extremities. Jacket protected with thin clear sheeting with small sections missing spine top and lower.
