Wine is discussed generally in terms of taste, vines, serving, storing, vintages, and wine-making; and in detail area-by-area. Reviewing the history, varietals, and appellations of individual countries, Stevenson includes lists of the major and "best of the rest" wineries with their addresses, acreage, annual production, recommended wines, and occasional commentary. Despite the terse writing, much of the information is flavored by Stevenson's opinions. Using readily recognizable symbols to compact detailed data, and handsome photos to illustrate the text, he has created a useful, quick reference tool. More attractive than Hugh Johnson's Modern Encyclopedia of Wine (S.& S., 1987), this reference also gives better coverage to wineries outside the major areas. Not a substitute for good area guides, such as Johnson's The Wine Atlas of France and Traveler's Guide to the Vineyards ( LJ 1/88), but libraries needing a handy, basic resource should consider.
