The Sound of the Mist: Finding the Courage to be Heard

Sophia Ocampo is a "Beige" piano teacher-a woman who has spent her life hiding a hyper-sensitive, world-class talent behind a mask of mediocrity. She believes that by remaining invisible, she can protect herself from the crushing weight of expectation and the pain of being "not enough."

But when a bass string snaps on her heirloom 1920s Heintzman piano, Sophia's carefully constructed silence is shattered. She is forced into the workshop of Julian, a reclusive luthier who treats pianos like living organisms and musicians like liars. Julian challenges her to find her Sincere Signal-the raw, vibrating truth that exists beneath her polished scales.

As the mist rolls in, Sophia must navigate the "Friction" of her own past, the "Neon" noise of the modern music industry, and the digital ghosts of an AI-driven world. From the clinical hallways of the Conservatory to the jagged peaks of Atok, Sophia discovers that the courage to be heard isn't about playing perfectly; it's about having the strength to be beautifully, authentically broken.

Berns Pen writes literary and speculative fiction that explores belief, power, and the fragile line between faith and control.

His stories dive into philosophical questions about morality, identity, and systems that shape human behavior-often placing ordinary people inside extraordinary moral dilemmas.

Blending symbolism, realism, and speculative thought, his work speaks to readers who enjoy fiction that challenges assumptions rather than offering easy answers.

When not writing, he explores ideas at the intersection of spirituality, psychology, and human resilience.
