The Source: The Dictionary of Contemporary and Traditional Scales by Steve Barta is a comprehensive piano reference designed for musicians, teachers, and dedicated learners who want a clear understanding of how scales, chords, and harmonic structures work together. Focused specifically on piano and keyboard, it combines essential theory with practical application, making it a reliable resource for both structured study, lesson use, and consistent daily practice.
This instructional piano guide brings together over 20 different scale types, each presented in all 12 keys, giving players a complete and practical view of tonal possibilities across classical, jazz, and contemporary styles. Clear right- and left-hand fingerings are included throughout, along with chord structures and full inversions, helping pianists develop accuracy, coordination, technical control, and confidence at the keyboard.
By combining theory with hands-on usability, this collection supports skill development in a way that feels both structured and inspiring. Players can explore new tonal colors, strengthen improvisation skills, and better understand chord-scale relationships that are essential for composition, arrangement, and performance. Whether used as a daily warm-up guide or a long-term study reference, it encourages consistent growth, musical clarity, and deeper technical awareness.
Ideal for independent learners, educators, and pianists looking to deepen their understanding of scales and harmony, this book fits naturally into lessons, rehearsals, or personal practice routines. It also makes a thoughtful and practical gift for anyone committed to improving their musicianship, expanding their technique, and building a stronger theoretical foundation through clear, playable piano material.
