This map was published not long after Alexander Von Humboldt's visit to South America, which triggered renewed curiosity in this continent about which little was known in Europe outside of coastal features. The map reflects a nice blend of geographical knowledge, mostly along the coast, and conjecture about the inland features. Pinkerton's atlas was among the most attractive of the early 19th century.
