"The first photograph ever made showing the division between the troposphere and the stratosphere and also the actual curvature of the Earth - photographed from an elevation of 72,395, the highest point ever reached by man." Captain Albert W. Stevens was the brave Air Corps (the USAF wasn't founded until 1947) pilot who snapped the photo from the balloon Explorer II nearly 14 miles above ground in 1935. In 2014, Alan Eustace would reach nearly double that height. Published as a supplement to the National Geographic Magazine in May of 1936."
