The Group Areas Act had seen the residents of old South End scattered to desolate, isolated and deserted areas all over the city. The people went through horrific hardships, many died of shock even before they started to move.

The book is an account of how the old South Enders struggled to find their feet religiously, educationally, politically and in the sporting scenario in the new areas they had been moved to. They did not know where they were going to be moved to considering that many families had a history going back to more than 125 years. It is against this background that this book originates.

In this book it is essential that we explore how the residents coped with the aforementioned aspects in the resettlement process. In this way we will attempt to build up a framework of historical data so that it may be available to learners and others who want to do or continue research.
