A controversial economist and sociologist, a Progressive concerned with immigration and interested in eugenics, Ross taught at Stanford until forced out by the Stanford family after an anti-Asian harangue, and wound up at the University of Wisconsin teaching sociology. Here he notes South America's disadvantage of not being colonized by Northern Europeans as thoroughly as North America was, laments the abuse of the working classes by the political elite, and describes conditions in Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, and Chile; including their native races, labor, caste & class, women, morality, character, education, religion & politics.'
