Grade 9-12 Earth-bound students can get involved in space research, not only as armchair astronauts but through some clever simulations of space conditions and experiments. The authors begin by placing all scientific investigation within the larger framework of the scientific method. They present some creative experiments on matter and energy in orbit; conditions in space; principles and applications of materials science; and plants, animals, microorganisms, and humans in space. Some of the activities are merely demonstrations, but many are suitable for extended science projects. All of them are firmly grounded in scientific principles as they apply on earth and in space. The discussion is often left open-ended regarding results, encouraging readers to explore for themselves. The experiments are clearly described but depend on readers' visualization skill in lieu of diagrams. The lack of detailed illustrations, as well as the complexity of some experiments and the sometimes hazardous materials involved, restrict this to high-school use. Safety is sufficiently stressed for older students, and adult supervision is often recommended. Computer programs written for the Apple II are included for two projects.
