In a handcrafted bookbinding: "The Little Block of Wood", 1939. Size of the binding: 8 ½ inches x 11 ½ in x 4 ¾ in. thick (at the fore-edge). (290 x 220 mm). Half-title; decorative title-page in red and black; introduction by Dr. Emanuel Svoboda. xx, pp. [1]-306, including alphabetical title listings; reproduces black & white Ales drawings (1874-1909), with decorative texts in Czech. The entire text is in Czech. In a handcrafted, sculptural design bookbinding, entitled: "The Little Block of Wood", created by Czech born bookbinder, Jan Sobota in 1982, and exhibited at Frantiskovy Lazne, Czechoslovakia, in 1982, and at the Guild of Bookworkers Exhibition in 1987. The book is shaped like a wedge of wood cut from a round of tree trunk, with the wood-grained leather on the edges, and leather to resemble bark on the covers, with the author's initials: MA, carved in the front cover. Japanese paper flyleaves, suede doublures; a wedge-shaped box-binding sculpture, covered with tan and brown reverse sheepskin over relief abstract shapes. Calf edges blind-tooled to resemble wood grain. In a gray, textured, cloth-covered slipcase, with inner, felt lined partitions, angled to hold the wedge-shaped book. The top and bottom edges of the right side of the slipcase show splitting to the top edge, and partial splitting to the bottom edge. The book is in fine condition. Weight: 8 lbs.
