A scarce run of the first 12 issues of this mimeographed weekly bulletin reporting on the Spanish Civil War and the activities of anarchist labor organizations such as CNT and UGT. The bulletin was published by the Spanish Labor Press Bureau, which was founded and run by the Spanish born anarchist Maximilian Olay (1893-1941) and his Lithuanian-born, Jewish wife Anna Edelstein Olay first in New York City and then in Chicago where the Olays lived. 34 issues were published in total between Jan. 1938-March 1939, with a cessation in publishing during April-May, 1938. Maximilian was born in Oveido, Austurias, and first entered the U.S. from Cuba in 1914 under the name Juan Escoto. He was a cigar maker and traveled around the country lecturing before he was apprehended in 1915 and deported back to Cuba. One contemporary newspaper account referred to him as "one of the most dangerous anarchists in the world" ("Merely One Anarchist Less," Carbondale News, Thu., June 10, 1915, p. 4). He later returned to the U.S. where he settled in Chicago. He and his wife were part of the Free Society Group and Maximilian began speaking in support of Spanish Republicans at the outset of the war under the auspices of the Committee for the Defense of Spanish Liberties. He died suddenly in 1941. His wife and son, Lionel, moved to Los Angeles where Lionel became a countercultural journalist writing for the LA Press, Cavalier, and the Realist. He was briefly married to the nightclub singer Ruth Olay. Anna Olay committed suicide in 1957 and Lionel died in 1966 at the age of 42. Corner-stapled 14" x 8 ½" sheets, mimeographed; each issue 5 p. (one 6). A few issues with edge wear and soiling, issue 12 with final leaf detached (but present). Issues generally very good or better. Just over a dozen institutions with any holdings in WorldCat.
