Spanish Point Tales

Nestled in the heart of Pembroke, Bermuda, Spanish Point was a neighborhood that defined the spirit of adventure in the 1960s and 1970s. It was a time when children roamed freely, adults enforced discipline with a firm hand, and mischief was a constant companion. Our summers were spent diving off rocks — and sometimes cliffs — daring to dive off a cliff as high as 50 feet, if you were brave enough. This is a glimpse into the carefree, sometimes reckless, yet unforgettable days of my childhood in Spanish Point.

Unlike children today, we spent our days outside, throwing rocks, long bike rides, skating, and occasionally suffering the bruises and broken bones that came with our wild antics. But through it all, there was an undeniable joy in our lives. The laughter, the lessons, and the misadventures that have stayed with me over the years are the heart of this collection.

Among these stories is a tale so strange, it turned out to be an urban legend — one I never knew I was a part of until years later, when my nephew whispered a phrase to me that I had once shared with my siblings as a child, that my mother surely got from her mother. It's one of many memories I hold dear, memories that were shaped by the cousins and friends who made my childhood a vibrant, often hilarious adventure.
