The value of the assimilation of information by the human mind and the role played by libraries in that process is a subject usually relegated to the murky realm of probability, conjecture, and opinion. Beginning with a good essay on the nature and dynamics of information, the authors move from the abstract to the concrete and establish proof of a positive relationship. Their material is drawn from 27 different studies accomplished over a 12-year period; the studies were made among corporate and organization libraries used by professionals (e.g., engineers, scientists, managers, etc.). Conclusions are carefully established; statistical presentation is thorough, presented in ratio and graphic form with textual explanation. While the studies are limited to professional users, the statistical methods and parameters employed are precise. All major library activities are discussed. It is not realistic to expect that all libraries can provide the intensive services offered by those covered in these studies, but this report is certain to be useful in justifying library services in many organizations. The findings in this volume establish a firm foundation for increasing services in other libraries as well.
