About this title

Synopsis

Specimens of Arabian Poetry: From the Earliest Time to the Extinction of the Khaliphat, with Some Account of the Authors is a book written by Joseph DAcre Carlyle and first published in 1796. The book is a collection of Arabic poetry, spanning from the earliest times to the end of the Khaliphat (the Islamic Caliphate) in 1258 CE. The poems are selected and translated by Carlyle, who provides an introduction to each poet and their work. The book is divided into two parts. The first part includes poems from the pre-Islamic era, known as the Jahiliyyah period, and covers topics such as love, war, and nature. The second part includes poems from the Islamic era and features works by famous poets such as Al-Mutanabbi, Abu Nuwas, and Al-Ma'arri. Carlyle's translations aim to capture the beauty and richness of the Arabic language, while also conveying the meaning and emotion of the original poems. He includes notes and explanations to help readers better understand the cultural and historical context of the poems. Overall, Specimens of Arabian Poetry is a valuable resource for scholars and students of Arabic literature and culture, as well as anyone interested in exploring the rich tradition of Arabic poetry. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
