Good ; No jackets. 1757 Printed for Jacob and Richard Tonson in the Strand, London. Eight volumes, complete. NOT ex-library. Hardcovers are full bound in brown leather with five raised bands on the spines. Each volume has title "SPECTATOR" in gilt on dark brown leather spine label with gilt ruled borders; volume number in gilt on another panel. The other panels each have a blind-stamped floral device. Covers have gilt ruled borders and gilt stamped design on edges and inside edges of each cover. Red, yellow, and blue marbled endpapers and page edges. Illustration on title pages, and first page of dedications. Green index ribbons. Overall, the volumes are in good condition, with rubbing to the corners and spine ends, and light to moderate surface and edge wear. Some volumes have minor chipping or loss at spine ends and wear on joint edges. Imprinted armorial bookplate with motto of "Lock Sicker" but no name on front endpaper of each. Pages very lightly and uniformly tanned but still supple. An extra spine label is affixed to the first blank fly leaf of vol. 1, but it does not match the current binding design. In the margins of the first quarter of vol. 1 there are just a few notations and some margin markings in pencil and in ink; vols. 6 & 7 have also have few notes in margins. Index ribbon missing from vols. 1-3. In Vols. 1 & 3 the front free endpaper is detached but present. Vol. 3, has a loose signature near center; vol. 8 has three signatures loose at center. NO pages are missing. No dust jackets. Pagination: v. 1, 458 pp. ; vol.2, 489 pp.; vol. 3, 464 pp.; vol. 4, 431 pp.; vol. 5, 432 pp.; vol. 6, 440 pp.; vol. 7, 479 pp.; vol. 8, 400 pp. + index.
