About this Item
A lovely little collection of the eighteenth century short-lived periodical the Spectator. Founded by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele, this journal lasted between 1711 and 1712, later revived for six months in 1714 without Steele. These journals aimed to promote the themes of the Enlightenment, such as philosophy, morality, family values and politeness, and unlike most other publications of the time, held women as an important part of their readership. Writers such as John Hughes and Eustace Budgell contributed. The current 'Spectator' magazine took its name from this earlier publication.Undated; dated from the publisher's activity.Complete in four volumes, bound in smart contemporary leather. In a half calf binding. Externally generally smart; a little rubbed to the head and tail of the spine, with some rubbing to the spine of volume II and IV. Small gift inscription to the front blank of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Good. Seller Inventory # 802R31
