Item description from seller

Octavo, [six volumes]. Publisher's three-quarter deluxe morocco, marbled boards, title and decorative gilt compartments on the spine. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Touch of rubbing to tips of various volumes, internally clean. All with solid text blocks. Bookplate of previous owner on the front pastedown. Complete in six volumes, an attractive set. First published serially between 1711 and 1714, The Spectator became one of the defining works of the English periodical essay, combining Addison and Steele's writings with the fictional framework of Mr. Spectator and the Spectator Club. This Appleton edition presents the complete text in six volumes, with Chalmers' prefatory material placing the essays and their contributors in historical and biographical context.
