Author was a noted Virginia politician who went by the nickname "The Lone Star" as a result of being the only Whig from Virginia, serving in the U.S. House of Representative from 1845-49. The present treatise contains Pendleton's impassioned speech delivered to the House on January 26th, 1846, in which he chastises Oregon settlers for putting nation at risk for war. Pendleton's sentiments, shared by many members of Congress, were prompted by a fear of England's power and wrath should the U.S. attempt to assert the right to protect its citizens in the disputed territory. Five months later, the dispute was settled by the Oregon Treaty which drew a boundary line between the United States and British North America.
