VI,562; VIII,476 pp. First published in Boston in 1863. - Wendell Phillips had sufficient income to abandon his law practice and devote his life to fighting for social justice. His career reached its apogee when he entered full swing into the abolitionist crusade. Red-headed, utterly fearless, Phillips is said to have possessed 'a mind like a Gatling gun' raking his hearers with his sallies. Unquestionable one of the greatest orators of his time, a man with a golden voice. To hear Phillips speak was to hear thunder threatening to darken a bright summer day.
