Review
On the day she is to wed, Catherine de Mortain is kidnapped by Rolfe de Mont St. Michel. Heartbroken, she despises her captor, who takes her from her home in Normandy to a castle in England. She is his prisoner, trapped in Cartbridge Castle away from her father, her home, her betrothed. At every opportunity she tries to escape, but Rolfe is a knight sworn to honor Henry, Duke of Normandy, and he takes his duties seriously. Rolfe knows that Catherine is innocent of any wrong doing. It seems unfair that she must be his prisoner, but she is a political pawn. By preventing her marriage, he prevents the joining of two wealthy families who will oppose Henry in his quest for the throne. Yet, he is struck by Catherine's beauty and her strong will, and he fears he won't be able to resist her charms if he is forced to stay with her. He has chosen the life of a warrior, but for the first time in his life, Catherine is making him question his choice. Catherine is forced to share Rolfe's company, and his room, because he is afraid she will try to escape again. He tells her why she has been kidnapped--and that her betrothed may not be the man she thinks he is. As time passes, Catherine begins to feel the awakening of desire for Rolfe. Confused at these new feelings, she wonders why she is thinking less about her future husband and more about Rolfe. Could it be that she is falling in love with him? It is only a matter of time before their mutual passion consumes them. Catherine knows her father and her betrothed are looking for her and she savors every moment with Rolfe. When the time comes for them to part, she will leave him with memories of their moments together. She knows he will not give up his warrior's life for her, or for the child she is carrying. What she doesn't know is that Rolfe loves her and it may not be too late for them to have a chance at happiness.Memorable characters and an excellent plot make Splendor a pleasing romp through another era!
