$14.95. sports Much of Hopper's book is pure common sense, but it does offer some practical advice for parents whose children are beginning to participate in sports. Hopper helps parents determine when their child is ready for sports, presents fundamentals in selecting a sports program, and discusses coaching at length. Charts and forms are provided for evaluating the child's athletic maturity and physical fitness. Parents will find the book useful on several levels ranging from casual reading to intense involvement with all the tests, charts, and record-keeping forms that are illustrated. The format of McInally's book makes it appropriate for parents who have specific questions regarding different aspects of their child's sports activities or for those who want to browse in a general topic area. Subjects such as the parents' role, starting up, performance, injuries, coaching, and mental battles are broken down into more specific categories that are enhanced by a question/answer discussion format. While the book cannot be all inclusive, the problems and questions are those that most parents have posed and experienced. McInally's readable style makes for pleasant and informative reading, and although he gears the guide to parents, young athletes will find the book easy to use and understand. Patricia A.
