This is a nicely illustrated, antique copy of "The SPORTS AND PASTIMES of the People of England" by Joseph Strutt. 1898; Chatto & Windus; London. The book features a color frontispiece engraving of an ancient chess match, and numerous black & white illustrations. "Including the Rural and Domestic Recreations, May Games, Mummeries, Shows, Processions, Pageants, and Pompous Spectacles, from the Earliest Period to the Present Time." First published in 1775, Strutt's "Sports and Pastimes" examined rural exercises practiced by Persons of rank, Pastimes usually exercised in towns & cities, domestic amusements of various kinds, and Pastimes appropriated to particular seasons. There is an Index and a 32 page publisher's catalog at the back. Condition: Clean front cover; the cloth on the spine has partially sun-faded; there is a small area on the back cover where the cloth has faded a bit. Tiny cloth tear at the top-right front cover corner. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end paper and pastedown resulting in the front cover being shaky. The back cover is firmly attached. Occasional mild foxing to the pages, otherwise clean; heavier foxing on the end papers and pastedowns, and the tissue guard over the frontispiece. Overall the book is in Good+ condition. (The book comes with a clear, protective sleeve over the covers - not shown.).
