Spousal equivalents are unmarried domestic partners, a group whose numbers have increased exponentially in the last 20 years. According to the authors, however, the laws have not kept pace with this change. Their book deals with the legal and financial implications of living together, using as illustration the circumstances of several pairs: yuppie, same sex, older, and college couples. Taxes, property, wills, cohabitation agreements, powers of attorney, medical concerns, insurance, and children are all covered. Recent developments, including changes brought about by the notorious Marvin v. Marvin case, are outlined and a 50-state survey of cohabitation laws is appended. Other good books on the topic are Marvin Mitchelson's Living Together ( LJ 1/1/81) and Michael Freeman and Christina Lyon's Cohabitation Without Marriage (Grover, 1983). This readable handbook is up to date and highly recommended for subject collections.
