Synopsis
Realizing she will be laying her eggs soon, Pen Swan urges her mate, Cob, to hurry and find a place to nest before it's too late. When these two majestic Trumpeter Swans face setbacks as they are shooed away from a beaver's lodge and a muskrat's den, they decide to build their own nest before it's too late.
Children love Pen's nesting ritual as she "plops and wiggles and squirms; and twists and jiggles" to form a bowl. Adults love the messages of determination, persistence, and teamwork. Teachers love the interesting facts about Trumpeter Swans.
This award-winning picture book is interactive too. Scan a QR code in the book to listen to a Trumpeter Swan's unique call. Can you tell what musical instrument it sounds like?
Winner of the 2019 Purple Dragonfly Book Award contest for best Picture Book Illustrations, Spring! Time to Build a Nest is loved by children ages 3 - 7 and anyone who wants to know more about Trumpeter Swans.
About the Author
Barbara Renner started writing children's picture books after she retired from teaching. Her love of wildlife and nature prompted her to write about the Common Loon, Gambel's Quail, and Trumpeter Swans. As a dog lover, she published an award-winning coffee table and gift book featuring her Yellow Lab rescue, Larry, and his words of wisdom.
Barbara and her husband have lived in Phoenix, Arizona for over 45 years. This is where they raised two wonderful children and explored Arizona in an RV as a family. Vacations in Minnesota opened Barbara's eyes to wildlife she wasn't accustomed to seeing in her Southwestern roots. When not writing her blog or multigenerational children's books about grandparents and their grandchildren, she can be found walking Larry, gardening, swimming, and enjoying the sunshine.
