Sprout and the Very Long Table

Everybody has a job. Everybody except Sprout.

The whole neighborhood is coming for Thanksgiving. The kitchen table is full of jobs, the little table is set out for the littlest somebodies, and the very long table just keeps getting longer.

Sprout wants to help. He really does.

But the bowl is too big to carry more than two steps. The stirring goes everywhere. And the turkey — the turkey is bigger than Sprout, and it does not move.

"What's my job?" he asks. Nobody hears him.

Then Sprout asks for one small thing. Just one. And it turns out nobody knows where to sit.

So he makes the name cards. He knows everybody's name. Some of the letters come out backwards. All of the letters are his. And he does not stop in the middle.

A warm Thanksgiving read-aloud about the smallest helper at the biggest table — and the job that was waiting for him all along.

WHY CHILDREN LOVE IT

Sprout fails three times before he succeeds — and nobody scolds him, not once. The bowl was heavy. The turkey was big. That's all. Children who have ever been told "you're too little" recognize this story immediately, and they recognize the ending even faster: small jobs are still jobs.
