Spurinna or the Comforts of Old Age: With Notes and Biographical Illustrations

Spurinna Or The Comforts Of Old Age: With Notes And Biographical Illustrations by Thomas Bernard. The work presents a moral and religious meditation on aging, framed as a dialogue among eminent men of the period. Opening with a Preface, the text notes the difficulty of preparing for old age and argues that age need not be accompanied by infirmity when guided by temperance, faith, and studious reflection. The central discussion takes place in a setting of familiar figures—a Bishop, a Lord, and colleagues—who debate the inconveniences of late life (unfitness for public life, bodily decline, diminished pleasures, and anxiety about death) and counterbalanced by consolations drawn from Christian doctrine, prayer, and the hope of immortality. The work also includes long biographical notes and illustrations of notable contemporaries and historical figures, and closes with reflections on knowledge, education, and the happiness of reunion with friends in a redeemed eternity. It blends moral philosophy, religion, and antiquarian biographical material to encourage a thoughtful preparation for death.
