1855 edition, eighth-thousand. Original brown cloth binding with leather spine. Spine is extremely worn, especially at embossing and hinges, but the gold lettering of the title is visible. The boards are fraying through at the edges, and the cloth is generally dirty. There are some pencil and pen marks, mostly on the free front endpaper, and the flyleaf is torn. This Fourth Reader is aimed at students of a somewhat higher level, perhaps secondary school. The interior pages are mostly clean, with some foxing, spotting, and discoloration. Epes Sargent (1813-1880) was an American editor, poet, and playwright from Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was considered a member of the "Knickerbocker Group" of writers. He developed a series of school books, The Standard Speaker and The Standard Reader, which were used in Boston schools for many years. Hardcover. Condition: fair. 332 pages plus publisher's list, 12mo.
