Stars, Clusters, and Galaxies (The Young Stargazer's Guide to the Galaxy)

Describes stars and groups of stars and explains how they are formed, why they shine, and how to find them in the sky

Grade 5-10-- Using activities and experiments, Gustafson introduces readers to observational astronomy. There is an emphasis on how stars, nebulas, clusters, and galaxies look and how they can be found and identified. Celestial objects that are impossible or difficult to see such as black holes and pulsars receive little coverage as they are outside the scope of this book. The activities are possible for readers to carry out with little or no adult supervision. Materials needed can be found in the home or easily and inexpensively purchased from a science-supply house. Anyone with an interest in astronomy would find much of value and interest here. The projects are illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings that clarify the instructions. Full-color photographs, some from the Hubble Space Telescope, add interest. Any library serving young people should consider this book. --Margaret M. Hagel, Norfolk Public Library System, VA
