A Statistical and Descriptive Account of the Several Counties of the State of North Carolina, United States of America

A Statistical And Descriptive Account Of The Several Counties Of The State Of North Carolina, United States Of America. This late-19th-century compendium is a county-by-county statistical and descriptive survey of North Carolina's geography, population, agriculture, industry, and resources. Published in Raleigh in 1869 by the North Carolina Land Company, the work collects detailed data for many counties—area, population, number of farms and acres improved, staple productions (corn, wheat, cotton, tobacco, rice, potatoes, etc.), livestock, fisheries, forests, minerals, and prominent towns and railways. It also includes introductory material on climate, education, and transportation, plus correspondence from notable citizens promoting emigration to the state and outlining economic potential. The volume serves as a rich historical source for postwar development, land speculation, and regional resource assessment, illustrating how promoters framed North Carolina for settlers and investors. It emphasizes the state's geographic diversity across eastern swamp lands, central piedmont, and western mountains, each described with statistics and commentary.
