About this title

Synopsis

This volume presents a selection of the letters of Ronald Aylmer Fisher, a pioneer in the methodology of twentieth century scientific research whose work on the principles of inductive inference greatly enlarged our understanding of the nature of uncertainty and contributed fundamentally to the philosophy of our age. The letters reflect Fisher's work in developing statistical methods needed in the interpretation of experimental data, and his later efforts, which recast the entire theoretical basis for mathematical statistics and experimental design. Relevant material from the letters of Fisher's distinguished correspondents is also included. This unique collection will shed light on one of the great legends in the history of science and statistics.

Review

these lettersa are good and have been most carefully edited * D.V. Lindley, Royal Statistical Society News & Notes, October 1991 * few books in statistics will appear during the nineties which are more significant than this one. We owe Professor Bennett a debt of gratitude for his labours in bringing Fisher's letters before the public ... This book is a must for anyone who is interested in Fisher and his work and therefore in the history and the future of statistics. No statistician's bookshelf should be without it * Statistics in Medicine * This is an indispensable aid to the serious study of Fisher's work in statistics * Publication of the International Statistical Institute * Professor Bennett is to be congratulated .... This is an indispensable aid to the serious study of Fisher's work in statistics * Short Book Reviews *
