Synopsis:

In addition to being extremely well-written and user friendly, this text is very comprehensive. The author has gone to great pains to include numerous examples from many disciplines to illustrate the applications of statistics. He has a Ph.D. in both statistics and in psychology, and he has taught statistics in business schools for many years. He has a strong and varied background as a consultant in business, psychology, and statistics, both nationally and internationally. One of the most popular features of the text is that it is well-structured, with guidelines and tools that help the user understand the inter-relationships among the topics presented. For example, there is an extensive series of flowcharts in Chapter 8 of Volume I that helps the user determine the appropriate statistical tool for almost any application, making hypothesis testing and model building much clearer. The user learns what questions must be asked in order to determine what test is appropriate, much like what a consultant must do on the job. Portions of these flowcharts are then used at the onset of all of the subsequent chapters, further providing important linkage among topics and across chapters. Appendix F of Volume II also includes these same flowcharts so that the user will have access to them as a set in either volume. Each chapter includes three types of problems, including written problems, multiple choice problems and quick quizzes. The answers to all problems are included in Appendix A of Volume II. The problems have been tested with thousands of students, thus ensuring accurate and tested answers. The book also includes one of the most comprehensive set of tables available in any textbook on the market. The standard normal distribution is extensive and allows the user to not only obtain the appropriate values, but also to visualize these values. The t-table contains many more degrees of freedom than most books, as does the F-distribution. Both of these tables also include a wider range of probability levels than provided in most books. The binomial and Poisson tables are also extensive, as is the chi-square table and others.
