This series already includes two other step-by-step guides by the author ( A Step-by-Step Guide to Your Sewing Machine , Chilton, 1990; and A Step-by-Step Guide to Your Viking , Chilton, 1990). Here the focus is on the Bernina, a sewing machine of Swiss manufacture. Part 1 is a basic introduction, identifying features, offering care and maintenance tips, and teaching basic stitches. Machine applique and embroidery are detailed in Part 2, which also instructs through various sewing tasks. The final part highlights the numerous stitches and pressure feet available for Bernina machines. Chilton's "Creative Machine Arts" series contains Jackie Dodson's Know Your Bernina (1988). This is a less detailed approach in which the advanced sewer learns the machine by creating more elaborate projects. New machine owners will appreciate the latest series because it offers more information on all those gadgets and attachments that can seem so overwhelming. Public libraries need only determine whether the Bernina is the machine of choice of their patrons.
