Step Up to Probability and Statistics: Learning probability through 101 STEP-inspired problems

What is the best way to understand probability and statistics?

Solve great problems.

Step Up to Probability and Statistics presents 101 carefully chosen problems inspired by the famous Cambridge STEP examinations — widely regarded as some of the most stimulating and challenging mathematical questions set for advanced students.

Designed for serious students of mathematics, this book follows the problem-solving tradition in which deep understanding is developed through tackling elegant and demanding problems.

Assuming only a background of advanced-level school mathematics, the problems explore topics such as:

• Foundations of probability
• Conditional probability and Bayes' theorem
• Expectation and random variables
• Probability distributions and limit theorems
• Combinatorics
• Probabilistic reasoning
• Each solution is written clearly and accompanied by a concise commentary, helping readers develop both technical skill and mathematical intuition.

Ideal for:

• Students preparing for the Cambridge STEP exam

• Maths and Science undergraduates studying probability or statistics

• Anyone who enjoys solving challenging mathematical problems

• Whether you are preparing for STEP, studying mathematics at university, or simply enjoy tackling demanding problems, this book offers a challenging and rewarding journey into the heart of probability.

Perfect for readers interested in probability and statistics problem solving, Cambridge STEP preparation, and advanced school or early university mathematics.
