Angaliyat, a child whose mother leads him by the hand to his stepfather's house, is a metaphor for the social position of the Vankars, a Dalit community. A cornerstone of Dalit literature, this first Dalit novel set in rural Gujarat of the 1930's draws attention to its own Dalit aesthetics and ideology.
