About the Author
Mark Gardner was named Jaklitsch's Senior Associate in 2005. He received his training at the Georgia Institute of Technology and earned an M-Arch from the University of Pennsylvania, where he now also teaches. Gardner takes a serious interest in the nexus of architecture and art, a nexus of longstanding importance to both his professional practice and his writings. A contributor to Johanna S. Dickson's Pamphlet Architecture 23 MOVE/Sites of Trauma, he is committed to practicing architecture as a socially beneficial art form. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and a member of the US Green Building Council (USGBC).
Calvin Tsao has emerged as one of the most thoughtful and original voices in contemporary design since co-founding Tsao & McKown Architects with partner Zack McKown in 1985. Drawing his inspiration from a dazzling spectrum of cultures and art forms spanning time and place, Mr. Tsao deftly interweaves diverse elements to forge a style that eludes categorization. Eschewing the high-profile habit of imposing an aesthetic brand on his projects, he instead advocates an approach that looks beyond the building to consider the behavior it inspires. Mr. Tsao currently serves as president of the Architectural League of New York and is a member of the Visiting Committee to Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. A fellow of the American Institute of Architects, he has taught at Harvard and the Parsons School of Design.
Rodolphe el-Khoury divides his time between design research and scholarship. As a leading academic, he has initiated and directed several programs in North America. After joining the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto in 2006, he was appointed to the Canada Research Chair in Architecture and Urban Design to explore new media and technology and their potential in reshaping the built environment. El-Khoury conducts project-based research as principal of ReK Productions, and is a partner in Khoury Levit Fong, a professional practice in architecture, landscape, and urban design with several AIA design awards to its credit.
