In Stichometry and Scripture, J.
Rendel Harris explores how line counts and margins shaped early New Testament transmission. The book investigates how ancient practices of counting verses and marking margins influenced the way texts were copied, divided, and interpreted across centuries. This edition surveys methods of stichometry, key witnesses like Euthalius, and the possible Cesarean library connections. It ties manuscript habits to broader questions about the text of Paul and the Catholic Epistles, offering a structured approach to reading how early copies were produced and circulated.
- Learn what stichometry is and why it mattered to ancient copyists
- See how chapter divisions and marginal marks appear across different manuscripts
- Discover how these practices inform critical study of the New Testament text
- Explore the idea of a shared Cesarean source and its possible implications
