4to, blue cloth boards with gilt floral decorations and titles on front and spine by Hugh Thomson. A little edge wear, some fading to lower front board. Illustrated endpapers. 25 coloured tipped in plates with other illustrations in the text. Undated circa 1918. Prize bookplate on reverse of frontis dated 1919. A very nice edition of this classic romance, where the heroine disguises herself as a barmaid in order to attract the attention of a shy suitor. One of the few classics from the 18th century still regularly performed. A comedy of manners taking place over the course of a long evening, with misunderstandings and deceptions, ultimately leading to a happy resolution.
