Reviews
Traub served as chairman of Bloomingdale's for two eventful decades, helping to transform the formerly dowdy New York department store into the high-profile fashion hub it remains today. In this largely autobiographical book, Traub looks back on the "Bloomie's" years. Predictably (and probably justifiably), he takes plenty of credit for the store's many successes but little of the blame for its recent troubles in the wake of Robert Campeau's disastrous 1989 takeover (which ultimately drove the store into bankruptcy and led to Traub's retirement). Although flatly written, the book does have its strengths, particularly the stories of behind-the-scenes deal-making surrounding the Campeau takeover. Also of interest are Traub's thoughts on the art and practice of retail promotion. This book is appropriate for collections in marketing and retail.
