"Alexis-François Artaud de Montor, born 21 July 1772 to Paris where he died on 12 November 1849 Is a diplomat, historian, translator and French collector. Emigrated during the Revolution, he fought in Champagne in the army of emigrants. Rallied to the Empire, Napoleon appointed him secretary of the French legation in Rome, then charge d'affaires in Florence in 1805. He then censor during the last years of the Empire, then secretary of embassy in Vienna and Rome under the Restoration. It gathers during his stay in Italy many early Italian paintings, which he is one of the first collectors. He retired in 1830 to devote himself to his literary and historical works and is elected member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in 1830. His translation of The Divine Comedy, and its observations on Italy, were highly regarded in his time. Many of his historical works have been translated into Italian and English." - wikipedia.
