Shan Hao was a wandering monk who was usually seen as a practitioner of Chan Buddhism, which is called in the West by its Japanese denomination Zen Buddhism.
However, Shan Hao himself never confessed to a specific affiliation. He was supposed to be Buddhist because he blessed people using the name of Lord Buddha, but he also referred to Wu Wei, a Daoist concept for going with the flow or not resisting life’s hardships.
Some people would call Shan Hao a beggar, but he never begged. He just accepted what was offered to him, which is also a practice of Buddhist monks.
People would say Shan Hao was happy because no one had heard his complaints. Yet, no one also heard bursts of laughter, just a sweet, subtle smile illuminating his countenance.
Shan Hao might have lived between the 13th and 15th centuries, but his historicity is doubtful. What is known about him are stories that remain in people’s memories.
