Reviews
Twenty-two rhymes, songs, and stories have been stripped down to their barest essentials for use on magnetic boards, flannelboards, or other surfaces. The patterns are simple enough for the most craft-challenged among us; making them consists of copying pictures, coloring them or inviting the children to help you, laminating them, and attaching fasteners, like Velcro, to the back. The flannelboard instructions are included in bold print throughout the story or rhyme. There are no instructions for making a storyboard; nor is there any guidance for purchasing one. Some of the selections, like "Bear Hunt," "Old MacDonald," or "The Little Red Hen" work well for this kind of quick and easy format. Others, however, like "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," are not quite as successful, since much of their flavor and charm as stories have been stripped away in order to create a bare-bones retelling. Not as strong a choice as Judy Sierra's The Flannel Board Storytelling Book (Wilson, 1997), this title can be a helpful tool for busy librarians looking for more storyhour ideas.
