The Story of the Bear is a story within in a story. As the children gather, the Storyteller begins a tale told to him by his grandfather. The children are hushed as he relates the ancient of a bear beloved by his bear family. He tells of vision, perseverance, melancholy, pain and final resolution. As the bear does what he must, the listening children are saddened by his death. The Storyteller translates the account for their greater understanding of life processes.
The book is written to help youngsters who experience the loss of a loved one. Beyond that the author offers the young readers other considerations to ponder—the call of curiosity to know what else is out there, the concept of pushing through adversity and that of coming to peace. All are there to serve as springboards for discussions with children experiencing loss.
The illustrations are bright and sensitively done. They nicely balance the text.
This book is a bit somber in tone as it should be when addressing family deaths. It is apt to be an important addition to bookshelves of families everywhere. The Story of the Bear would make a nice bereavement gift for children and perhaps for adults.
