The Story of the Cadsbys is the first in the Indian Railway Library published by A.H. Wheeler & Co. of Allahabad beginning in 1888. The series was proposed by Rudyard Kipling, who was attempting to raise money to buy passage home to England, and the first six titles in the series were stories by Kipling, most of which were reprints of other stories he had previously published in other periodicals published in India. All the volumes had green paper wrappers with illustrations by Kipling's father, John Lockwood Kipling. The first six titles were sold for a rupee. In total there were 26 titles in the series, with seven being by Kipling.
