The Story of the Dog and His Uses to Mankind (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from The Story of the Dog and His Uses to Mankind

The lasting and admittedly well-deserved liking for dogs held by the peoples of the Western civiliza tion has stimulated the output of a vast literature dealing with them from almost every conceivable standpoint. As a result there is very little that, strictly speaking, can be called new to be said about them, except perhaps on the purely scientific side. But to write a fresh book, worth publishing on the subject, required patience and diligence in biblio graphical research, astuteness in selecting for treat ment such aspects of their story as will make a wide appeal and a standard of intelligence regrettably rare in amateur compilers of books on animals. Happily Cecil G. Trew is well equipped for the task he undertook and being gifted as well with artistic skill he has added considerably to the valm and interest of his volume by the plates and text figures with which he has illustrated it.
