Panoramic view. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 11" x 14 1/4" This finely detailed bird's eye view of the town of Stralsund, NE Germany published circa 1652 in Merian's monumental 16 volume "Topographia Germaniae." The city is depicted surrounded by water and defensive bastions, showcasing its strategic position on the Baltic Sea. Numerous ships are shown in the harbor, and the city is surrounded by fortifications. A key in the lower right lists important landmarks, including churches and municipal buildings. An ornamental cartouche near the upper margin features the city's coat of arms. This map was engraved by Joh. Staud. In very good condition, with fold lines as issued. Printed on 17th century laid paper, with red colored edges. Rumsey 16525.145 Matthaus Merian (1593-1650), was a draughtsman, topographical engraver, and publisher from Switzerland. He worked in collaboration with Martin Zeiller and his son Caspar Merian to document the cities and landscapes of the German-speaking world.
